Here is a simple guide to replacing your windshield wiper blades. 1. First off, you will have to purchase new windshield wiper blades. You can do this by visiting any auto parts store or your auto dealer. In most cases, you only have to tell the salesperson the make, model, and year of your vehicle in order for them to provide you with replacement windshield wiper blades. It is wise though to bring your old wiper blades along so you can make sure they match the new ones you will be buying. Sometimes you will have a choice of replacing the entire windshield wiper assembly or just the rubber blade. This choice is up to you but it is generally easier to replace the whole assembly. 2. Now that you have your new windshield wiper blades, it is time to install them. If you have not done so already, remove the old windshield wiper blades from your vehicle and leave the wiper arms themselves pulled up and away from the windshield glass. In most vehicles, the wiper arms have a singular mounting point where the wiper blade assembly attaches. Examine this mounting point to determine how to properly remove your old wiper blades.In some cases, you may need to depress metal or plastic tabs on the top or sides of the wiper blade assembly in order to remove it from the wiper arm. The use of a flathead screwdriver is often helpful in dealing with these tabs. Once these tabs are sufficiently depressed, you should be able to pull the wiper blade assembly off the wiper arm. Old wiper blades are usually stubborn so you may have to pull hard to remove them. Do not discard your old wiper blades though until you have installed your new ones and made sure that they function properly. 3. New windshield wiper blades usually come in a package along with appropriate mounting hardware. In many cases you only have to push the new wiper blade assembly onto the mounting point of the wiper arm until it snaps into place. Other times, several pieces of mounting hardware will be provided and you will have to choose the hardware that fits your wiper arm attachment point. You can then proceed to mount the wiper blades. All vehicles are different; make sure to read the illustrated directions on the back of the packaging for the correct installation procedure. 4. Now that your new windshield wiper blades are installed, it doesn’t hurt to give the windshield a thorough cleaning. Road tar builds up easily on your windshield and this greatly reduces the effectiveness of windshield wiper blades. Plain old Windex will not remove road tar. Use some rubbing alcohol and newspaper instead. As an alternative, most auto parts stores sell specially formulated windshield glass cleaners which are very effective at removing road tar and I highly recommend their use. 5. Once you have cleaned your windshield, push your wiper arms back down against the windshield glass and test the functionality of your new wiper blades. Turn your wipers on for a minute or two and make sure that the new wiper blades do not come loose. They should also make even contact with the windshield glass throughout their entire wiping motion. If this is not the case, make sure they are properly installed and readjust them if necessary. Soaking your windshield with water makes it easier to determine if your new wiper blades are working properly.Replacing windshield wiper blades is not difficult although it can be a frustrating process the first time around.
